Fast scrolling in Firefox

08.03.2024

I use KDE Plasma on all my desktop and laptop computers which has the very handy feature of scrolling faster when the Shift key is held. Of course this only works in Qt software and that excludes Firefox for example. This missing feature has always bugged me because it's in my muscle memory from almost all other software that I use. Luckily, it's easy to add back.

  1. Open a new tab, type about:config and press enter.
  2. Search for shift in the search bar at the top.
  3. Double click mousewheel.with_shift.action and set it to 1 (i.e. vertical scrolling).
  4. Double click mousewheel.with_shift.delta_multiplier_y and set it to 800. You can play around with this value and set the scroll speed multiplier to your desired value. I found 800 to be the right speed for my taste.

My source for this information has been a post on /r/firefox by /u/panoptigram. But since I don't trust Reddit anymore to keep information available, I figured it would be a good idea to archive that nifty tip here.

Have fun scrolling!
